When identifying yourself as a Christian it may well be that you need to get into the context of Antioch and the first time that people were called "Christians" Acts 11:26. It was a little like "jerk"or "methodist" or "nerd". Heh what a pleasure to begin to identify with this glorious title of humility.
It's great when you hear stories of people being jerks for Jesus in a way that the world would think they are crazy but heh the good Lord just smiles. I have a person like this in our church who has planted a vegie garden near Diepsloot for children who don't have a square meal every day. She just does it 'cause she is compelled by God to be a jerk. Others will watch and say why ? And she will say WHY NOT???
Just a little encouragement to those of you who pursue righteousness for the sake of absolutely blind faith in Jesus, don't give up and keep on being a "jerk for Jesus"

Christ-follower
"Christian" was a term that literally meant "literal Christ", and was term of derision used in Antioch to say, "Hey, you're not your own person, you're just copying Jesus". It is in this sense that I agree with you. I prefer personally to call myself a "Christ-follower" rather than a Christian, as I think it conveys what "Christian" meant to convey.
I'd be nervous of "jerk for Jesus", although I hear your heart. If we are "jerks" in the sense of being insensitive, idiotic, dumb, insulting, or out of touch, then I have a problem with what you're saying. But if we're unexpected, surprising, "crazy" - and I think is what you mean - then I'm with you.
Nice thought.
Freaks?!
I think this spirit was the same one behind DC Talk's "Jesus Freaks" - and MiC's "Freak" recently. I don't know if the term "freak" offended anyone but the point is a generation of outcast young people identified with it as a way to be different - loving Christ and others lavishly.
For me - no problem with "freak" but rather a large one with "jerk." Maybe because in my understanding "freak" isn't insulting but "jerk" is...
So agree with you.
I was really working with the thought that in every way Christ was rejected and scorned. The picture we often need to hold in our minds is the picture of Isaiah 52:14 -15. Not a pretty picture. I was really expressing the need for humility in the church and in fact my wife also said "jerk" may be a bit harsh.I agree, but need to also say the our being Christ - followers has a definite cost involved and the world would often see us as strange.
