did Jesus get sick?

Carl's picture

I had the time of my life last night, best beloved, wrestling with God in the high throes of 'flu - WWF stuff...

'scuse my ignorance, but did the Evangelists mention that Christ took cold? Sore throat, possibly? Any coughs, sniffles?

Was illness part of Jesus' humanity - or not? I'm no Docetist but I'd have taken comfort in just one verse!

ps. Can we get the health & wealth people on this one?

Was
Jesus an Essenes ?

an Essene?

One of the more radical departures for Jesus was his willingness to engage people, esp those on the margins. Not a particularly Essenian characteristic, I imagine. Having said that, many evangelicals could certainly qualify...

Is?

Is sickness really a part of being human?

It doesn't look like Jesus got sick to me, though it does seem the apostles did.

Jesus certainly got tired, but not sick (by the looks of it.)

He didn't sin-- maybe sin isn't supposed to be a part of being human either. Can we take less comfort in Jesus because he didn't sin? Doesn't seem to me to be the case (in fact, we can take more comfort in him because of it.)

Likewise, what if sickness is the same?

Jesus' entire life was not

Jesus' entire life was not journalized for us to precisely know if he did get sick? But I think HE DID NOT, All I can base it on is the fact that Adam could not get sick before the fall. Jesus was sinless therefore he could not get sick...

However...

It is, of course, generally accepted that Jesus did not sin, however as God incarnate he certainly could experience the effects of sin, and while many illnesses are the direct or indirect result of one's own sinful behaviour (e.g. the diseases related to affluence: heart desease, hypertension, diabetes, certain types of cancer, etc.) there are surely just as many illnesses that are related to other people's sin and the general effects of sin in the world (e.g. effects of pollution and unsanitary conditions, etc.)

Ergo: Jesus was fully human and fully susceptible to bacteria, viruses, pathogens and stress!

However, in light of the strong link between mind and body, was he so strong mentally and spiritually that he could internally ward of the effects of these by a super strong immune system?!

Let the debate continue...

A Divine Sneeze...

Would it make Jesus less than fully divine if he did get sick? I say no!

stepping down

Christ was humiliated. He suffered. If his body was the target of human and spiritual attack, why rule out microbes?

What bakes my noodle is whether Jesus got spiritually sick. "Eloi, Eloi..."

Isaiah 53

Interesting subject.....did Jesus get sick.
It certainly seems like this is possible if you read Isaiah 53, particularly verses 4 & 5.

Sickness

Question - how do you know the apostles got sick? (Are you referring to Paul and the "thorn in his flesh" thing?). And my question is - is sickness a necessary result of sin?
